Rear-End Accidents

Rear-end accidents are the most frequent type of car wrecks. They account for about 29 percent of all motor vehicle collisions and a substantial number of injuries and fatalities each year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

A person who has injured in a rear-end car accident caused by another driver may seek financial relief for their pain and suffering, as well as for their medical expenses and other losses. The families of those killed in rear-end accidents have a right to seek compensation for their losses too.

If you have been seriously injured in a rear-end accident in Elizabeth City, the Outer Banks or elsewhere in Northeastern North Carolina, the experienced car accident lawyers of Glover Law Firm can help you recover the money you need and deserve. Rear-End Accidents and Distracted Driving in North Carolina

The N.C. Department of Transportation’s Crash Facts for 2010 reports that “followed too closely” was the contributing circumstance in 4,989 car crashes in the state during the year, which included 1,607 injury crashes and five fatalities. The report says 51,624 car accidents were caused by “failure to reduce speed.” These included 1,582 accidents with at least one personal injury and 84 fatal crashes.

In a 156-page analysis of rear-end crashes and near-crashes, the NHTSA found that about 87 percent of rear-end crashes involved some form or degree of distracted driving on the part of the at-fault driver. The study also said that 81 percent of rear-end crashes in the group studied were collisions with a lead vehicle that was stopped.

The NHTSA study authors said that “cell phone use, and in particular, conversing (talking/listening) on a cell phone while driving was one of the top distraction-causing activities.”

Whiplash and Rear-End Accidents

Rear-end collisions are synonymous with whiplash. “When a vehicle stops suddenly in a crash or is hit from behind, the seat belt will keep a person’s body from being thrown forward. But the head may snap forward, then backward, causing a whiplash injury,” the National Institute of Health’s PubMed Health website says.

Whiplash injures muscles and ligaments in the neck, and spinal disks. The symptoms of whiplash may include:

  • Neck pain and stiffness
  • Headaches, typically at the base of the skull
  • Pain between the shoulder blades of in the shoulders
  • Lower back pain
  • Dizziness
  • Blurry vision
  • Ringing in the ears
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Concentration problems
  • Memory problems
  • Sleep problems.

Many whiplash victims recover within a few months of a rear-end car accident, according to the Mayo Clinic. However, severe whiplash may result in pain that continues for several months to a couple of years. Neck pain persists in some whiplash patients despite medical intervention that includes prescription pain relievers, muscle relaxers, or stronger medication, such as lidocaine (Xylocaine) injections, used along with physical therapy and assistive devices, like cervical collars.
