North Carolina Motorcycle Insurance Requirements

There are specific requirements for insurance coverage for motorcycle riders in North Carolina. All motorcyclists must have at least the minimum amount of insurance in order to operate this kind of vehicle. North Carolina compels riders to carry a minimum of:

  • Bodily injury liability coverage (one person) with limits of $30,000
  • Bodily injury liability (all persons, one accident) with limits of $60,000
  • Property damage liability coverage in the amount of $25,000

This liability insurance can pay benefits to other people injured by an at-fault motorcyclist. When the motorcycle rider was not the cause of the crash, North Carolina law protects motorcyclists with a set of laws that hold negligent automobile and truck drivers responsible for the accidents they cause. An injured motorcycle rider can collect damages from the at-fault driver’s insurance company, including medical costs, lost wages, pain and suffering and compensation for the loss of enjoyment of life.

NC law requires drivers of other passenger vehicles to carry liability coverage with the same 30/60/25 limits as motorcyclists. While this coverage can help offset the various costs of a motorcycle accident, it may not be enough in more serious crashes. That’s especially true if a motorcyclist is hit by a car or truck driver who doesn’t have enough coverage or has no insurance. In these types of circumstances, having underinsured motorist (UIM) and uninsured motorist (UM) coverage on your motorcycle policy is crucial.

Although a negligent driver can be held responsible under North Carolina’s laws, that doesn’t mean the person at fault has the resources to pay for the damages his or her carelessness causes. This is the reason why UIM / UM is so important for every motorcycle rider on the road. North Carolina requires all drivers to carry this type of coverage as a part of their auto or motorcycle policy. If you are unsure of the details in your own policy, it’s easy to find out the exact figures included in your coverage. Just look on the declarations page, which shows each line-item such as medical expenses and comprehensive.

UIM / UM coverage on your motorcycle or auto insurance kicks in when you’re in an accident with a driver who has inadequate coverage or cannot be found, as in a hit and run crash. If that driver is determined to be at fault, then your UIM/UM coverage will pay your damages. However, the money that’s available is limited by the amount of coverage you purchased before the accident happened.

Increasing your UM / UIM limits is inexpensive and worth the peace of mind. By revising your policy from $30,000 to at least $100,000, you’re only committing to an estimated $34 per vehicle per year. Even if you decide to increase your coverage to $1 million , it’s just an average of $185 extra for every vehicle on a yearly basis. These slight enhancements could make all the difference after a severe motorcycle accident with a careless driver who doesn’t have the coverage to pay for your expenses.
